how does
it work?

The Damon braces is a self-ligating braces that uses a special type of bracket which functions like a sliding door and the archwire is allowed to move freely, compared to traditional metal braces where the wire is tightly and prominently held in place. Comfort and discreetness aside (especially with the Damon Clear), the lack of elastic ties also make it a more hygienic option.

Metal Braces are the traditional braces that we all know, as well as the most economical and common option.

1. What is an orthodontist (specialist in braces)?

Just like there are specialists in medicine (such as cardiologists, neurosurgeons etc.), there are specialists in dentistry. An orthodontist is a dentist, who, after attaining their Bachelor in Dental Surgery degree, went on to do a 2- or 3-years full-time course in orthodontics. Their work includes early interceptive treatment for children as young as 8-9 years old, braces for crowded teeth and even surgical treatment for jaw problems.

You may refer to their credentials as found on their own website, or the Singapore Dental Council’s register. If they are an orthodontist, you should see that they have been registered in the field of orthodontics, and has educational qualifications and professional memberships in orthodontics.

  • Aesthetic - Braces allows crooked teeth to be straightened to achieve a beautiful smile and a healthy bite, achieving harmony between the teeth and the face.
  • Health - Poor bite and mal-alignment of the teeth can result in early loss of teeth, gum problems, excessive tooth wear and joint problems. Well-aligned teeth are easier to clean and maintain, thus reducing the likelihood of tooth decay and gum problems in the future.
  • Confidence - Straight teeth allow for a beautiful smile that greatly improves one’s confidence. Children with poorly aligned teeth tend to be teased, or feel self-conscious about their appearance. Left untreated, this can lead to psychological, social and developmental problems.

If you are uncomfortable with the appearance of your teeth, or if your teeth/bite is causing you speech or swallowing problems, look for an orthodontist to have the problem fixed. You will most likely require braces, and the orthodontist will be able to recommend you the most suitable one for your needs and preferences.

You are generally expected to see your orthodontist at 4-6 weeks intervals; however, this can vary greatly depending on the type of braces and the severity of the condition.

The cost of orthodontic treatment varies greatly depending on the severity of the problem, as well as the type, complexity and length of the treatment. Speak to us for more personalized information.
