WHAT DOES AN ORTHODONTIST DO?

An orthodontist is a dentist who specialises in diagnosing, preventing, and treating irregularities of the teeth and jaws. In simpler terms, their expertise is in straightening teeth and fixing misaligned bites.

Here are some of the specific things that orthodontists can do:

  • Diagnose problems with the bite and jaw alignment
  • Develop treatment plans to correct misaligned teeth and jaws using braces, retainers, and other appliances
  • Monitor the progress of orthodontic treatment

Orthodontic treatment can improve the appearance of your smile and your oral health. Orthodontists can help prevent cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems by correcting misaligned teeth and jaws.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ORTHODONTIST AND A GENERAL DENTIST

Both orthodontists and dentists are qualified professionals who play a role in your oral health, but they have distinct areas of expertise. A general dentist focuses on preventative care and maintaining overall oral health. They provide a broad range of dental care, including cleaning, fillings, cavities, root canals, gum disease treatment, crowns, bridges, dentures, and teeth whitening.

An orthodontist, on the other hand, is a dentist who has completed an additional three years of specialised training focused solely on orthodontics. In many cases, your dentist will recommend seeing an orthodontist if they identify concerns with your bite or teeth alignment.

WHAT FACTORS SHOULD YOU CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING AN ORTHODONTIST?

Choosing an orthodontist is a significant decision and it is crucial to find the right orthodontist who can help you achieve a more confident smile. To help you select the perfect fit for your needs, here are some key factors to consider:

  • Research Credibility – Make sure the orthodontist is MOH-accredited. This means they have completed additional education and training beyond dental school specifically focused on orthodontics. You can also check their affiliation with reputable organisations to ensure their commitment to ongoing education and staying current with the latest advancements in orthodontics.
  • Ask for Referrals – In most cases, a general dentist may recommend an orthodontist should you need orthodontic treatments. Alternatively, you may also ask your family or friends for recommendations. Personal referrals can be a great way to find orthodontists with a good reputation and positive patient experiences.
  • Review Patient Feedback – Check online review platforms to see what other patients have to say about their experience with the orthodontist. Look for feedback on aspects like communication, treatment options offered, and overall practice atmosphere.
  • Evaluate the Facility and Available Treatment Options – Inquire about the technology used by the orthodontic clinic. Do they offer advanced diagnostic tools and utilise various treatment options like traditional braces, self-ligating braces, and clear aligners (Invisalign)?
  • Compare Prices and Financing Options – Be upfront about your budget and ask for a clear breakdown of the costs involved in your treatment plan. Many orthodontists offer financing options to make treatment more affordable.
  • Consider Location and Accessibility – Choose an orthodontic clinic located conveniently for you, considering factors like travel time and appointment scheduling flexibility. Regular appointments are crucial for successful orthodontic treatment.

WHAT FACTORS INFLUENCE THE COST OF ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?

Getting braces is an investment in your oral health and a brighter smile. However, with various treatment options and orthodontic clinics available, the cost can vary. Here are the key factors that influence the price of orthodontic treatment:

  • Treatment Complexity – Simple cases with minor misalignment might require shorter treatment plans and less complex techniques, leading to a lower cost. Conversely, complex cases involving significant jaw discrepancies or impacted teeth may necessitate extended treatment and potentially additional procedures, impacting the overall cost.
  • Treatment Duration – Generally, simpler cases requiring less time will be less expensive than those needing extended treatment to achieve desired results. Your orthodontist will estimate the treatment duration based on your individual needs.
  • The Type of Braces You Choose – Different types of braces are available, each with varying costs. Traditional metal braces are typically the most affordable option. Ceramic braces offer a more discreet look but may come at a slightly higher price. Self-ligating braces like Damon braces can be faster and more comfortable but often cost more. Invisalign, the clear aligner system, is a popular choice for adults seeking a nearly invisible treatment, but it can be the most expensive option.
  • Number of Appointments – More complex cases may require more frequent adjustments and checkups, leading to higher overall fees. Your orthodontist will determine the necessary appointment schedule based on your treatment plan.
  • Dental Insurance Benefits – Many dental insurance plans offer some coverage for orthodontic treatment, particularly for younger patients. The extent of coverage can vary significantly depending on your specific plan. Explore your dental insurance benefits to understand how much they might contribute to the cost.
